Manager: Paul Molitor (third season).
He's Here: C Jason Castro, RHP Matt Belisle, SS Ehire Adrianza, LHP Craig Breslow.
He's Outta Here: 3B Trevor Plouffe, C Kurt Suzuki, LHP Tommy Milone, RHP Pat Light.
Projected lineup: 2B Brian Dozier (.268, 42, 99, 18/20 SBs), RF Max Kepler (.235, 17, 63), CF Byron Buxton (.225, 10 HRs, 38 RBIs, 118 Ks in 298 ABs), 1B Joe Mauer (.261, 11, 49), 3B Miguel Sano (.236, 25, 66, 178 Ks in 437 ABs), DH Kennys Vargas (.230, 10, 20 in 152 ABs), LF Eddie Rosario (.269, 10, 32), C Jason Castro (.210, 11, 32 with Houston), SS Jorge Polanco (.282, 4, 27 in 245 ABs).
Rotation: RH Ervin Santana (7-11, 3.38 ERA, 149 Ks), RH Phil Hughes (1-7, 5.95, 11 HRs, 11 starts), LH Hector Santiago (3-6, 5.58, 13 HRs, 11 starts after trade with Angels), RH Kyle Gibson (6-11, 5.07, 1.561 WHIP), LH Adalberto Mejia (rookie).
Key relievers: RH Brandon Kintzler (0-2, 3.15, 17/20 saves), RH Matt Belisle (0-0, 1.76 in 40 games for Nationals), RH Ryan Pressly (6-7, 3.70, 1 save in 72 games), LH Taylor Rogers (3-1, 3.96, 64 Ks in 57 games), LH Craig Breslow (0-2, 4.50 in 15 games for Marlins).
Hot Spot: Starting Rotation. The resuscitation of a team with the worst record in the majors last season must begin with starting pitching that ranked 30th out of 30 in wins (37), ERA (5.39) and strikeouts (655). Hughes, Santiago, Gibson and Berrios will all be counted on to make 2016 the aberration and not the standard. Adding Castro, who has a strong reputation for game calling and pitch framing, probably can't hurt. There's enough depth in the group at least to give the Twins a chance to return to respectability as new baseball chief Derek Falvey continues to try to revamp organizational philosophy and process for the long term. The bullpen appears more vulnerable than the rotation, despite being bolstered by the addition of the veteran Belisle. Three-time All-Star closer Glen Perkins is still working his way back from surgery last year to repair a torn labrum and will likely land on the disabled list to start the season. Kintzler fared well in his place, but doesn't have a track record.
Outlook: The Twins ranked a respectable sixth in the American League in total bases and eighth in OPS despite their abysmal record last year. Buxton's sparkling September, following a second straight frustrating summer, restored his and the club's confidence in the 2012 second overall draft pick. Dozier probably hit his power ceiling in 2016, but if Buxton and Sano can strike out less and get on base more there's the potential in place for a productive offense. Vargas hit his way back into contention for the DH spot with a decent finish to 2016, but the pressure is on him to prove he's worth a spot in the lineup with a strong performance this spring by Park, who struggled badly to adjust to major league pitching in his arrival from South Korea last year. | | BOSTON: 2016: 93-69, first place
Manager: John Farrell (fifth season)
Who's new? LHP Chris Sale, RHP Tyler Thornburg, 1B Mitch Moreland, OF Steve Selsky
Who's gone? DH David Ortiz, 3B Travis Shaw, 3B Yoan Moncada, 2B Aaron Hill, C Ryan Hanigan, RHP Clay Buchholz, RHP Junichi Tazawa, RHP Koji Uehara, RHP Brad Ziegler
Projected lineup: 2B Dustin Pedroia (.318, 15 HR, 74 RBI), LF Andrew Benintendi (.295, 2, 14 in 34 games), SS Xander Bogaerts (.294, 21, 89, 13 SB), RH Mookie Betts (.318, 31, 113), DH Hanley Ramirez (.286, 30, 111) CF Jackie Bradley Jr. (.267, 26, 87), 3B Pablo Sandoval (.000, 0, 0 in three games), 1B Mitch Moreland (.233, 22, 60 with Rangers), C Sandy Leon (.310, 7, 35) or Christian Vazquez (.224, 1, 12)
Rotation: LH Chris Sale (17-10, 3.34 ERA), RH Rick Porcello (22-4, 3.15), RH Steven Wright (13-6, 3.33), LH Drew Pomeranz (3-5, 4.59), LH Eduardo Rodriguez (3-7, 4.71)
Key relievers: RH Craig Kimbrel (2-6, 3.40, 31/33 SV), RH Tyler Thornburg (8-5, 2.15 with Brewers), RH Joe Kelly (4-0, 5.18), LH Robbie Ross (3-2, 3.25), RH Matt Barnes (4-3, 4.05), LH Fernando Abad (1-6, 3.66 with Twins and Red Sox), RH Heath Hembree (4-1, 2.65)
Hot spots: Third base. Is this the year Sandoval is known more for his ability to play baseball than his physique? Sandoval, who missed all but three games last year because of a shoulder injury, showed up to spring training looking slimmer than years past. His production at the plate and agility on the field followed suit in the Grapefruit League. The Red Sox have shown they aren't afraid to take playing time away from the Panda if he doesn't deserve it. Josh Rutledge, a competent fielder and perhaps a better hitter against left-handers, is around just in case.
Outlook: Boston scored more runs than any team in baseball last year, and this year's club has the pitching to avoid another early playoff exit. Newcomer Sale is the best left-hander in the AL, an ace in his prime. Porcello is the reigning Cy Young Award winner. David Price, when he returns from an elbow injury, gives the Red Sox arguably the best 1-2-3 punch in the league. Ortiz retired, but he'll leave a bigger hole in the hearts of fans than in the lineup. Benintendi is a candidate for the AL Rookie of the Year award, while Betts played like an MVP at age 23. A bounceback season from Sandoval would give opposing pitchers no chance to breathe. Triple-A depth shouldn't be enough of an issue to prevent the Sox from challenging the Indians for the pennant. |
| | Red Sox's Porcello eyes first win streak of season
BOSTON -- Rick Porcello, the reigning American League Cy Young Award winner, goes for something he hasn't had in 2017 when he faces the Minnesota Twins on Wednesday night. A winning streak. The Red Sox right-hander went 6 1/3 innings, allowing four runs (three earned) in defeating the Los Angeles Angels on Friday for his first victory in six starts. That moved him to 4-9 with a 5.00 ERA on the season (he was 22-4 with a 3.15 ERA last year). One of the 2016 wins came against the Twins in Minneapolis on May 6. On Wednesday night, he faces rookie Adalberto Mejia (2-3, 4.93 ERA) in the third contest of a four-game series between teams fighting for their division leads. "It was a little bit better location today than it has been the last couple of starts," Porcello said after the win over the Angels. "I threw some better breaking balls. I kept guys off-balance. In that regard, it was definitely better, but I've got to finish that ballgame off better than I did." He was talking about the seventh inning, when three consecutive extra-base hits -- after he had gotten the first batter -- ended his positive evening with a thud. Said Boston manager John Farrell of the outing as a whole: "It was, to me, vintage Rick Porcello. The sink had returned to his two-seamer, and it's a tribute to the work that he continues to do." With the victory Tuesday night, the Red Sox moved into first place in the American League East, a game ahead of the New York Yankees. The Twins, who made three errors that led to five unearned runs Tuesday, arrived in Boston a half-game ahead of the Indians atop the AL Central and fell back into second place by a half-game with a loss Monday. With both Minnesota and Cleveland losing Tuesday, the standings remained the same. Mejia pitched five scoreless innings as the Twins blanked the Indians 5-0 on Friday night to start a three-game sweep in Cleveland. "I thought his stuff was good," Twins manager Paul Molitor said. "I think sometimes he tries to get a little fancy, a little cute with his stuff and changes his arm angle when he's making good pitches over the top. "Some of the counts, 0-2, 1-2, where he let guys back in, they battled, fouled off some tough pitches, but (it) seemed like he made some of his best pitches when he got to full counts." Mejia has yet to face the Red Sox in his young career. Porcello, 10-9 with a 3.83 ERA lifetime against the Twins, was brilliant and got the kind of support he received last year (more than any starter in the major leagues) in an 11-1 victory at Target Field on May 6. He gave up seven hits and one run, striking out six and without walking a batter. Brian Dozier is 8-for-37 (.216) against Porcello, but he has three homers and eight RBIs against the right-hander. Kennys Vargas is 5-for-10 while Max Kepler is 1-for-9, Eddie Rosario 2-for-12 and Chris Gimenez 2-for-11. Because of a long rain delay Tuesday after the second inning, the Twins had to get six innings out of the bullpen. Regarding his pitching staff for the rest of the series, Molitor said, "We've been having trouble getting a lot of innings here as of late. A couple guys have stepped up at times, which has given us a little bit of reprieve. You start thinking about those things during the game and trying to figure out who's going to be available tomorrow. "Best case scenario, Mejia has a good day. We'll find a way to get through it, and hopefully we'll come back and play a better game." |
