| | | FLORIDA ST: Last season: 26-9, lost to Xavier in NCAA Tournament second round.
Who's gone: G Dwayne Bacon, F Jonathan Isaac, G Xavier Rathan-Mayes, C Michael Ojo, F Jarquez Smith.
Who's back: G Terance Mann is the Seminoles' leading returning scorer (8.4) and rebounder (4.5) along with being one of the team's more accurate shooters (57.9 percent from the field the past two seasons). G PJ Savoy is likely to move into the starting lineup and is the team's best 3-point shooter, making 40 of 100 last season. C Christ Koumadje is the tallest player in school history at 7-foot-4. He is imposing in the paint as a shot blocker but he is also one of the quickest players on the team and can easily get down the floor.
Who's new: G M.J. Walker. He was considered the top shooting guard in the nation by several recruiting services and is the second McDonald's All-American in the past three seasons to attend the school. C Ikey Obiagu is raw on the offensive end, but he could end up leading the team in blocked shots.
The Skinny: Despite returning just one starter, the Seminoles were picked to finish eighth in the Atlantic Coast Conference preseason poll. A lot of that is due to Hamilton often using 12 players in games last season and having an up-tempo style that averaged 82.1 points. With Mann and Savoy at the guards, it should be a better team from the perimeter but it is not as athletically gifted as last year. If ever there was a team that needed to win by a committee approach, it might be this one. If Hamilton can fuse the newcomers with what he has returning, they have a chance at making return NCAA Tournament trips for the first time since 2012. | | VIRGINIA TECH: Last season: 22-11, lost to Wisconsin in first round of NCAA Tournament.
Who's gone: F Zach LeDay, G Seth Allen, G Ty Outlaw, Khadim Sy
Who's back: G/F Chris Clarke, eventually. The Hokies' most athletic player sustained a torn ACL last season and, depending on who you talk to, could be ready for the start of the season, or not at all. He averaged 11.4 points and 7.3 rebounds and provides boundless energy. G Ahmed Hill. He also averaged 11.4 points and was second on the team with 59 3-pointers, which have always been a big part of the offense for what always seems to be a undersized team, and is again.
Who's new: True freshmen Wabissa Bede, Nickeil Alexander-Walker and P.J. Horne and redshirt freshman Tyrie Jackson are all being counted on to boost the Hokies' outside shooting and provide depth to a team that has only six returnees with experience in the rigors of ACC play.
The Skinny: Virginia Tech basically outscored people last season, but is less likely to be able to do that this year. Williams has pledged an increased emphasis on defense, and while his players seem on board, the absence of experienced depth or proven defensive stoppers will make last year's success hard to replicate. |
