KEY GAME INFORMATION
MARYLAND: Last season: 19-13, missed NCAA Tournament first time in four years.
Nickname: Terrapins.
Coach: Mark Turgeon.
Conference: Big Ten.
Who's gone: Forward Kevin Huerter (NBA), forward Justin Jackson (NBA), center Michal Cekovsky.
Who's back: Sophomore Bruno Fernando, a 6-foot-10 center, averaged 10.3 and 6.5 rebounds to land on the Big Ten All-Freshman team. Junior guard Anthony Cowan Jr., a two-year starter, will run the offense and was the team's leading scorer last season with 15.8 ppg. Guard Darryl Morsell started 21 games last year, averaging 8.7 points and a team-high 1.8 offensive rebounds. Forward Ivan Bender played in 15 games before a season-ending knee injury on Dec. 29.
Who's new: Freshman center Jalen Smith should be an immediate contributor. Averaged 17.9 points, nine rebounds and three blocks for Mt. Saint Joseph High in Baltimore. ... Guard Serrel Smith Jr. averaged 29.3 points and five rebounds as a senior at St. Petersburg High in Florida. ... Freshmen Trace Ramsey (6-7) and Ricky Lindo Jr. (6-8) provide height off the bench.
The Skinny: Fielding the youngest squad since he arrived at Maryland in 2011, Turgeon expects a return trip to the NCAA Tournament despite having only one scholarship senior (Bender). Jalen Smith and Fernando gives the Terrapins a formidable front court, and Cowan will have plenty of passing options when he's not taking the shot himself from the outside.
Expectations: Las Vegas oddsmakers have Maryland a 120-1 longshot to win the NCAA Tournament, same as Wisconsin from the Big Ten but far behind conference co-favorites Michigan and Michigan State at 35-1.
OHIO ST: Last season: 25-9, 15-3 Big Ten
Nickname: Buckeyes
Conference: Big Ten
Who's gone: F Keita Bates-Diop, F Jae'Sean Tate, G Kam Williams, G Andrew Dakich.
Who's back: F Kaleb Wesson. The 6-foot-9, 270-pound sophomore averaged 10.2 points and will be counted on to do more this season. ... F Andre Wesson. Kaleb's older brother is a small forward who will have to provide some leadership to the young team. ... C Micah Potter. Hampered by injuries, the huge junior hasn't been able to realize his potential. ... G C.J. Jackson. Senior will be counted on as one of the primary ball-handlers. ... G Musa Jallow and F Kyle Young. Expected to play bigger roles after seeing limited playing time as freshmen last year.
Who's new: G Luther Muhammad. Highly touted freshman shooting guard could work his way into a starting role. ... G Duane Washington Jr. Elite shooter from California is expected to find a role as a freshman. ... F Justin Ahrens. Well-rounded freshman de-committed after former coach Thad Matta was fired, but Holtmann got him back on board. ... F Jaedon LeDee. The 6-foot-9 freshman has the size and versatility to play at any of the frontcourt spots. ... G Keyshawn Woods. Graduate transfer from Wake Forest adds depth.
The Skinny: Holtmann cleaned up a program that had fallen into disarray, leading the Buckeyes to a 25-9 finish and earning himself Big Ten coach of the year honors. Now he has to maintain the standard after losing his two star players and welcoming a lot of new ones. The Wesson brothers, Jackson and Potter will have to play to expectations, with some immediate help from freshmen for depth. Jallow and Young have the potential to be key contributors.
Expectations: Las Vegas oddsmakers have Ohio State as a long shot to win the NCAA Tournament at 85-1, on par with North Carolina State and Cincinnati, while well behind Michigan, the highest ranked Big Ten team at 35-1.
PREVIEW
Bad time for Ohio State to visit Maryland?

A tough stretch for Ohio State could get even tougher when No. 19 Maryland visits Value City Arena in Columbus on Friday.

The Buckeyes (12-4, 2-3 Big Ten) have lost three consecutive games for the first time under second-year coach Chris Holtmann and are having problems finding secondary help when sophomore center Kaleb Wesson gets in foul trouble -- which happened in a home loss to No. 6 Michigan State and road losses to Rutgers and No. 23 Iowa.

Holtmann played 10 players for at least 10 minutes in the 72-62 loss to the Hawkeyes on Saturday with little rhythm or success.

"We're all searching a little bit and trying to look for some life and energy from our guys," Holtmann told reporters following the game. "I've been trying to give some guys an opportunity to see how effective they can be. Obviously, it's a difficult environment for that to happen.

"We've obviously got a lot of work to do, a lot to work on."

It's a bad time to experiment with the Terrapins (15-3, 6-1) coming to town.

Like the Buckeyes, Maryland is a young team searching for an identity. The difference is that the Terps are winning. A 64-60 victory over Wisconsin on Monday was Maryland's sixth in a row, although it came the hard way.

The Terrapins squandered a 21-point lead with 17:47 to play and trailed 60-59 with less than a minute left before Anthony Cowan hit a 3-pointer to put the Terrapins ahead.

"We were up big, lost our composure a little bit but they tested us, and we just found a way to win," freshman forward Ricky Lindo said afterward.

Maryland coach Mark Turgeon is not surprised his youthful squad is inconsistent, noting he sometimes plays five freshmen at a time. The Terrapins looked out of it against Indiana on Jan. 11 when they were down by 14 early and 10 in the second half, yet still rallied for a 78-75 win.

The Terrapins are 5-1 when trailing at the halftime, including 4-0 in conference play.

"So, everybody is saying you have to start games better, but I would rather finish them better, right?" Turgeon said. "We are the fifth youngest team in Division-I basketball. This team is doing amazing things. It's not getting any easier. We have to go on the road, Ohio State, Michigan State the next two games."

The Buckeyes have two priorities to defeat Maryland: Keep Wesson in the game and take care of the ball.

Ohio Stats turned the ball over 34 times the past two games, including a season-high 21 vs. Iowa.

"Every game you're going to go through ups and downs, go through adversity," Ohio State freshman guard Luther Muhammad said. "And when you're going through that, you've got to stay together. You can't get distant from each other. You've got to encourage each other and stay as one, stay as a unit."

Wesson, who averages 16.2 points per game, scored only two points in just 23 minutes vs. the Hawkeyes.
