Who's gone? 1B Mitch Moreland, INF/OF Ian Desmond, OF/DH Carlos Beltran, RHP Derek Holland, RHP Colby Lewis, RHP Shawn Tolleson, RHP Lucas Harrell
Projected lineup: CF Carlos Gomez (.231, 13 HR, 53 RBI, 18 SB in 118 games with Astros and Rangers), DH Shin-Soo Choo (.242, 7, 17, 6 in 48 games), 3B Adrian Beltre (.300, 32, 104), 1B Mike Napoli (.239, 34, 101 with Indians), 2B Rougned Odor (.271, 33, 88, 14 SB), C Jonathan Lucroy (.292, 24, 81 with Brewers and Rangers), RF Nomar Mazara (.266, 20, 64), SS Elvis Andrus (.302, 8, 69, 24 SB), LF Jurickson Profar (.239, 5, 20) or Ryan Rua (.258, 8, 22, 9 SB)
Rotation: LH Cole Hamels (15-5, 3.32 ERA), RH Yu Darvish (7-5, 3.42 in 17 games), LH Martin Perez (10-11, 4.39), RH A.J. Griffin (7-4, 5.07), RH Andrew Cashner (5-11, 5.25 with Padres and Marlins)

Hot spots: Designated hitter and left field. Choo, Napoli and Joey Gallo are all candidates to DH. Gallo, a perennial prospect with prodigious power, can make it interesting by seizing his first-ever Opening Day roster spot. Otherwise Napoli (a first baseman) and Choo (an outfielder) can switch off as needed. Moving Desmond to the outfield was successful enough last year that the Rangers are taking a similar approach with Profar. The oft-injured 24-year-old will try to break camp as a left fielder, platooning with Rua.
Outlook: Coming off back-to-back division titles, the Rangers begin 2017 with a weakened farm system and the footsteps of the Astros and Mariners passing them by ' or at least catching up. There's still a lot to like here. Napoli was a huge bargain on a $6 million contract following his 34-homer season in Cleveland. He'll join Beltre and Odor to form a dangerous middle of the order. Darvish is entering his first full season back from Tommy John surgery, and he and catcher Lucroy are entering their long-awaited walk years. This isn't the deepest roster in the AL but it's capable of winning another division title if its stars can avoid the disabled list.
CLEVELAND: 2016: 94-67, first place, AL champions, lost to Chicago Cubs in World Series.
Manager: Terry Francona (fifth season). He's Here: 1B-DH Edwin Encarnacion, OF Austin Jackson, LHP Boone Logan, RHP Carlos Frias, OF Wily Mo Pena, CF Bradley Zimmer, SS Eric Stamets. He's Outta Here: 1B-DH Mike Napoli, OF Coco Crisp, OF Rajai Davis, C Chris Gimenez, 1B Jesus Aguilar, OF Marlon Byrd, RHP Jeff Manship.
Projected lineup: SS Francisco Lindor (.301, 15 HRs, 78 RBIs, Gold Glove, league-leading 15 sac flies in first full MLB season), 2B Jason Kipnis (.275, 23, 82, career-high 156 games), LF Michael Brantley (.231, 0, 7 in 11 games following shoulder surgery; .310, 15, 84, MLB-best 45 doubles, 15 SBs in 2015), DH Edwin Encarnacion (.263, 42, AL-high 142 RBIs for Toronto), 1B Carlos Santana (.259, 34, 87, 99 BBs, 99 Ks), 3B Jose Ramirez (.312, 11, 76, played 4 positions) or Giovanny Urshela (.225, 6, 21 in 81 games for Cleveland), RF Brandon Guyer (.333, 2, 14 in 38 games with Indians; .241, 7, 18 in 63 games with Rays; led majors with 31 HBP) or Lonnie Chisenhall (.286, 8, 57), C Yan Gomes (.167, 9, 34 in 74 games due to shoulder injury), CF Tyler Naquin (.296, 14, 43) or Austin Jackson (.254, 0, 18 in 54 games with White Sox before left knee surgery).
Rotation: RH Corey Kluber (18-9, 3.14 ERA, 227 Ks, third in Cy Young voting), RH Carlos Carrasco (11-8, 3.32, 25 starts due to injuries), RH Danny Salazar (11-6, 3.87, 25 starts, limited in postseason by injury), RH Trevor Bauer (12-8, 4.26, 28 starts, began season in bullpen), RH Josh Tomlin (13-9, 4.40, 5.90 strikeout-to-walk ratio).
Key relievers: LH Andrew Miller (10-1, 1.45, 12 saves, 70 appearances with Yankees and Indians), RH Cody Allen (3-5, 2.51, 32/35 saves), RH Bryan Shaw (2-5, 3.24 in league-high 75 games; 70 games in each of past four seasons), RH Dan Otero (5-1, 1.53, 70 2/3 innings), LH Boone Logan (2-5, 3.69, 66 games with Rockies). Hot Spot: Brantley's Right Shoulder. An All-Star in 2014, Brantley missed out on the fun last season as the Indians won the pennant without him. His return is vital for Cleveland as it tries to make another deep run because he can help provide lineup protection for Encarnacion and stabilize an outfield that was under constant change in 2016. Brantley may not hit for the same extra-base power he had in the past, but he could still offer a high average and excellent defense.
Outlook: With perhaps the league's deepest pitching staff, the Indians are an AL favorite and appear poised to return to the World Series. Last year, they exceeded expectations and built a 3-1 Series lead against the Cubs before losing three straight ' including a dramatic Game 7 at home. One elusive win from the franchise's first championship since 1948. This season, the Indians will try to finish the job. There are injury concerns with Brantley and Kipnis, who won't be ready for the start of the season because of shoulder inflammation. Ramirez could slide over to help fill in at second base. But the addition of Encarnacion finally gives Cleveland the intimidating, middle-of-the-order slugger the club has coveted since the glory days of Jim Thome, Manny Ramirez and Albert Belle. Cleveland is a baseball town again as Indians fans spent on tickets this winter and are rallying around the club the way they did back in the mid-1990s. Lindor is on the cusp of superstardom, and one of the Indians' top priorities should be signing him to a long-term deal while he's still affordable.
PREVIEW
Francona to return as Indians host Rangers

CLEVELAND -- The Cleveland Indians will welcome back manager Terry Francona to the dugout Wednesday night for the third contest of a four-game series with the visiting Texas Rangers.

Francona left the Monday game in the fifth inning after becoming ill in the dugout. He was taken to the Cleveland Clinic, where he spent the night undergoing a battery of tests that all came back negative.

He will continue to be monitored by doctors over the next several weeks.

"The doctors ruled out any major health issues, which was a big relief to all of us," Indians president Chris Antonetti said. "It raises a red flag, but Tito underwent every test you could possibly imagine, and they all came back clean."

The Indians and Rangers played two wildly contrasting games in the first two contests of their series. Cleveland won a slugfest 15-9 Monday. Texas won a pitchers' duel 2-1 Tuesday.

Trevor Bauer (6-6, 5.53 ERA) starts for Cleveland on Wednesday. Bauer is averaging a career-high 10.3 strikeouts per nine innings this year, up by 2.3 over last year, but he also is averaging a career-high 9.4 hits per nine innings.

This will be Bauer's first appearance against the Rangers this year. In three career starts against Texas, Bauer has no record and a 4.35 ERA.

Yu Darvish (6-5, 3.12 ERA) starts for Texas. Darvish last faced Cleveland on April 3, Opening Day, and he got a no-decision in an 8-5 Indians victory. In 6 1/3 innings, Darvish gave up four runs on four hits with four strikeouts and five walks.

In five career starts against Cleveland, Darvish is 1-2 with a 3.62 ERA and 42 strikeouts in 32 1/3 innings.

Darvish's .199 opponents' batting average ranks second in the American League. He is also third in the league in strikeouts (109), fifth in innings pitched (101) and fifth in ERA (3.12).

The Rangers come into the Wednesday game feeling better about closer Matt Bush, who has come through a turbulent handful of games to record saves in his past two outings.

In nine appearances prior to getting a save Sunday at Yankee Stadium, Bush had three losses, three blown saves and an ERA of 9.00 that raised his season ERA from 0.96 to 3.25.

However, Bush made it back-to-back saves by closing out the win Tuesday in Cleveland. He pitched a scoreless ninth inning to pick up his 10th save of the year.

"He's using his slider well and throwing his fastball into good locations," Texas manager Jeff Banister said. "He's getting his pitches where he needs to get them, and getting back to what made him successful. That's to use a power fastball and then a slider/curve combination to get hitters off his fastball."

The Rangers, who have homered in 21 of their 23 games this month, are 1-4 against the Indians this season.
